ASK's is the only public site we're aware of that offers searches by AREA — using the same geographic parameters that Sonoma County agents employ, with no need for zip codes or knowledge of city boundaries. This method is particularly useful when searching for properties in unincorporated communities — it avoids the confusion of searching rural areas by city names, which may or may not be relevant.

If you'd like to try this method, begin by selecting COUNTY first. Note: AREA designations correspond with the county chosen — so select Sonoma County first — then only the AREAs and CITYs located here will be displayed.

CITY does include country properties outside city limits, but using City names may produce less than optimal results when looking for homes in rural areas. For example, many properties appearing to be in the unincorporated "cities" of the west county — Occidental, Freestone, or Graton — actually have Sebastopol addresses.

If you use these "city" names you could be excluding possibilities that actually match your criteria. On the other hand, using just Sebastopol CITY would exclude listings in those rural communities which do have postal address of Occidental, Freestone, or Graton. This same phenomena is true in all of other unincorporated communities throughout the county. So, unless you're certain that the properties you'll be interested in are all within a particular "city's" boundaries we recommend using just AREA and leaving the CITY category blank.

Review and familiarize yourself with AREA BOUNDARIES before beginning. These AREAS (created by the local multiple listing service) reflect either community boundaries resulting from major traffic or naturally occurring geographic separators. And in most cases these parameters will be much more meaningful than city or zip code
