Leaving the familiarity of a home where you’ve lived for many years may be intimidating. Downsizing from a family-sized home to a studio apartment can be challenging. The need to make decisions about where to begin and what to do next — when accustomed to making decisions with a life-partner, who is no longer present — may seem especially overwhelming. Just the thought of preparing a home for market, managing the paperwork, and the negotiations involved may cause some folks to stay in situations that no longer serve their needs.
As Senior Real Estate Specialists, Sharon and Michele are very aware of the heartfelt issues that come up for seniors when making sale and purchase decisions. We have made it our business is to be sensitive to these concerns, to be creatively responsive, and to provide the support needed to make this transition as smooth and carefree as possible.
We recognized that a lack of familiarity with available housing alternatives was oftentimes a hindrance to making a much needed move. So we began looking online and contacting local service agencies in search of a senior housing list that we could share with our clientele and discovered that there really isn’t one single resource offering all such information. Snap for Seniors online is the most comprehensive source we found, but it lists only communities with RCFE (Residential Care for the Eldely) licenses. Snap provides no information on the several fine facilities operating locally under a slightly different business model — offering essentially similar services, but via an independent on-site homecare provider.
So we conducted our own survey, including site tours of all RCFE and independent living communities serving 40 or more and taking a drive-by look at those serving 7-39. In addition to these there are currently 132 smaller Residential Care homes in Sonoma County, serving 6 or fewer, operating primarily within modified single family dwellings. We also tracked down and visited every mobile home park, senior apartment complex, and planned development retirement community. As a result we now have the most comprehensive list available of housing alternatives for seniors in Sonoma County — including assisted and unassisted congregant living communities, senior mobile home parks, senior rental housing and retirement communities (in which you can buy your own home).
We offer a unique touring service for those considering selling a home. We'll provide the basic information, help you assess what might work for you if you;d like, and put together a tour — driving you to visit those places that interest you most (just as we would for someone seeking to buy a home), though you may only be interested in renting.
We are also continuously working to develop and maintain a cadre of professionals and service people who might be helpful when considering or when making a move; individuals and businesses to whom we can confidently make referrals as needed. Our aim is to be a primary and central resource — to act as a concierge — handling all elements of the move process, whether directly or via referral, so that our elder clients may focus on just those aspects of making the move which interest and appeal to them most.
Our intent is to work with other professionals as a team. Foremost among these is often the professional move manager, who can be employed to attend to all the details of dealing with one’s personal belongings — helping you to decide what to take and what not to, and what to do with what you don’t. We have also identified many useful service providers associated with both public and private agencies, including placement specialists, geriatric case managers, and private fiduciaries.
In some instances it may become clear that staying in your current home is your best solution. After discussing your circumstance and your concerns it may become apparent that just some small changes might be your best option. Perhaps handicapped modifications, or hiring a bit of outside help, or a reverse mortgage, are what's really most needed; in which case we hope to also be able to pass along referrals to other service providers as needed.
As Elder Concierge Real Estate Service providers we act as project managers and negotiator professionals — we have the training, practical experience, attitude and values set required to provide the exceptional service that our elder clients deserve.
